What is Modified Citrus Pectin?
Modified Citrus Pectin is a carbohydrate that is naturally occurring and found in plant cellular walls. It is most concentrated in the pulp and peel of citrus fruits like limes, grapefruits, oranges, and lemons….you know…the white stuff on the inside of the peel. Pectin has little nutritional value, although it is a great source of soluble fiber. The body does not easily absorb pectin. Scientists have been able to create a modified version (i.e. Modified Citrus Pectin), which is easily absorbed in the human bloodstream.
MCP and Breast Cancer: Inhibits Inflammation
Beginning in the 1980s, researchers discovered that MCP is not only a source of fiber but a super cancer fighter as well. Galectins [2] are a kind of lectin protein that helps cells clump together. Sometimes they can also aid in the spread of cancer by keeping cancer cells “sticky”.
Studies such as a 2002 investigation [3] conducted by Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan have found that higher levels of Galectins in the blood can indicate cancer metastasis. This is especially true for prostate and breast cancer as well as melanomas. Other research has found that Galectins may act as a protector or shield for cancer cells.
Modified Citrus Pectin has a unique relationship with Galectins. It can “stick” to them within cancer cells and make them slippery. Slippery cancer cells cannot stick to cells [4] in other parts of the body.
When cancer cells continue to circulate in the blood stream, they become open to destruction by the immune system. In addition, MCP has also been shown to prevent angiogenesis [5], i.e. the growth of new blood vessels that feed cancer tumors. Finally, Modified Citrus Pectin can inhibit cancer cell communication which can encourage metastasis.
MCP as a Toxin Chelator
Heavy metals come in many forms: aluminum from antiperspirants, bromide from commercial flours, and mercury from dental amalgams [6]. They all lead to inflammation and eventually dis-ease if left in the body, however. This includes cancer [7].
According to a 2006 study [8] published in the journal Phytotherapy Research, MCP has a “chelating effect” on heavy metals. This means that it binds with harmful metals and escorts them out of the body through the urine. In the study conducted by the Amitabha Medical Clinic and Healing Center in California, after 6 days of MCP use, levels of lead in urine increased by over 500%. Urinary cadmium levels increased by 150%. High urinary metal levels indicate that the body is expelling them. Modified Citrus Pectin only affects harmful metals. Essential minerals such as zinc and magnesium are not affected.
