We are quite aware that a high carbohydrate diet and excess amounts of sugar can lead to diabetes and other health issues. But recent evidence is now showing us that high blood sugar levels and specifically high levels of IGF-1 or Insulin Growth Factor are closely related to increased Breast Cancer risk.
A study published in the International Journal of Cancer showed evidence that the higher the circulating IGF-1, the higher the risk for Breast Cancer, specifically receptor-positive cancer. IGF-1 increases specific proteins that can stimulate Breast Cancer tumors. Reducing carbohydrate intake after a cancer diagnosis may even reduce the risk of breast cancer recurrence .
The “dense breast syndrome” is also associated with an increase in IGF -1. The higher the IGF-1, the more cellular proliferation and growth.
High IGF-1 has been shown to suppress the Immune system of postmenopausal women with Breast Cancer.
What exactly is IGF-1?
It is a protein that has a “non-suppressible insulin-like activity”. It is produced by the liver as a hormone and is one of the most potent activators of cell growth and proliferation . It also has an anti-apoptosis effect, in that it prevents cells from naturally dying. IGF-1 is stimulated with the abundance of growth hormones. In a normal, healthy growing child, IGF-1 is a necessary hormone, but when there is an excess of this hormone in the adult phase, it can lead to serious consequences.
What causes and increase in IGF-1 production?
1.) Growth hormones in meat and in dairy are contributing factors to the increase in IGF-1 in adults. So make the effort to eat clean meat.
2.) Excessive meat, seafood and commercial dairy consumption. If you choose to eat meat, your portion should be no bigger that a deck of cards.
3.) Refined carbohydrates and sugars have a stimulatory effect on IGF-1. In fact the mortality rate of cancer patients i s higher with those who have diabetes.
A simple blood test can determine your IGF-1 levels. Next time you are getting any blood work done, ask for the following tests to be added. They are simple markers that may give you some insight about the inflammatory and methylation processes in your body. Inflammation and methylation issues are linked to increase cancer risk.
