Is There a Better Way to Treat Cavities Than with Fillings?

Conventional modern dentistry has treated cavities and other dental issues the same way for over a century. If a tooth begins to decay, the only thing to do is drill into it, take out the infected material and patch it up (usually with harmful metal amalgams [1]). Now researchers in the new field of regenerative dentistry are seeing teeth for what they really are–  precious and irreplaceable. And they are discovering new, more natural ways to repair them that do not include invasive “drill and fill” techniques.

Essential #5 of the 7 Essentials System® is to Embrace Biological Dentistry. This can be a challenging step for some, but once addressed, healing typically moves forward.

Did You Know Your Teeth Can Regenerate?

This may come as a surprise to you, but your teeth actually do have the ability to regenerate in a limited way. They do this through the production of a substance called dentine [2] (sometimes spelled “dentin”). The body is able to produce a thick band of it just below the enamel layer as a protective measure if sensitive dental pulp is exposed. By itself, however, dentine cannot fix an entire cavity. With a little help, however, it just may be able to.

The King’s College Study

A team of researchers at King’s College Department of Craniofacial

Development and Stem Cell Biology in London stumbled upon something novel a few years ago. The drug Tideglusib had previously been used in clinical trials as a possible treatment for Alzheimer’s Disease [3]. The results of the drug for this purpose were not as positive as the study team thought they would be. However, they did discover something else. Tideglusib seems to have the ability to “stimulate the renewal of stem cells” in teeth.

According to a 2017 report [4] published in the journal Scientific Reports, in a mouse model Tideglusib was soaked in medically-approved collagen sponges designed to naturally disintegrate over time. Then the researchers placed this material in tiny holes in teeth where cavities had formed. As the sponge material broke down over time, it was replaced by naturally-produced dentine, thus healing cavities in the teeth.

Although this study about a drug was not a “natural medicine” approach, it does give us the insight that our teeth can regenerate.

Is Restorative Dentistry and Regenerative Endodontics the Future of Dentistry?

Restorative dentistry [5] is the study, diagnosis and management of oral disease and the rehabilitation of function in the area for the individual. Holistic dentists [6] who practice restorative dentistry try to do this using methods that are the least invasive and safe as possible, and with a consideration as to how the particular dental challenge may affect the whole body.

Regenerative Endodontics [7] is an exciting new field within dentistry which investigates new ways to encourage cells and stem cells to divide rapidly in order to repair damage. It is also part of the overall new field of regenerative medicine in general. You can learn more about what regenerative medicine is (and how it may help with Breast Cancer) HERE [8].

It could be a few years or more before consumers begin to see this technology in their dentist’s office. Many experts feel, however, that it is just a matter of time.

Tips for Natural Oral Care

According to Sharpe and others, regenerative treatments for cavities may be right around the corner. In the meantime, there are LOTS of things you can do to help heal your teeth and gums as well as your whole body too on your Healthy Breast journey [9].  Remember that oral health is intricately connected [10] to the well-being of your whole body!

Here are a few tips:

-Safely Remove amalgams. If you have them, seriously consider removing them. Its that simple. To learn more about safe removal, check out this blog [11]. Also consider the effect root canals have on your overall health.  [12] There is much evidence that the root canal site leaks harmful bacteria into your system, causing undue stress on your Immune System.

-Brush and floss every day. Many people prefer to use a water pick or both. I use both. Be sure to go fluoride-free for your endocrine and reproductive health. Finally, along these lines, don’t forget tongue scraping [13]. The tongue is where a lot of nasty bacteria hang out. You can get an inexpensive tongue scraper at your local drug store.

-Practice the ancient art of oil pulling [14]. Experts say that 15 minutes at least three times a week is most effective. If you are in a crunch for time, 5-10 minutes is better than not at all.

-Chart your dental health with an acupuncture meridian chart. Your teeth are connected to every organ in your body through the acupuncture meridian system. Take a look to see if that amalgam or root canal may be sitting on a breast meridian. This may be motivation for you to find a biological dentist in your area. Here is wonderful interactive meridian chart [15] for you to play with.

-Use natural gum-healing oils like clove, myrrh, tea tree, eucalyptus [16] and peppermint.

-Visualize your mouth, teeth and gums, which are so connected to the rest of your body, as vibrant, alive and healthy through and through!
