I have been through Breast Cancer two times. Both times I discovered it early using breast self-exam, or BSE– which is why I am so passionate about encouraging other women to learn how to properly do a BSE. I had no idea what I was doing when I was standing in the shower, poking around at my breasts. I just knew that it was important to feel for suspicious lumps on a regular basis.
This week for Breast Health Awareness Month, we celebrate the empowerment that hundreds of women now feel after learning how to perform their own breast self-exams with a home training kit called My Breast Friend™ !
The Truth About Breast Cancer Detection
According to the American Cancer Society , “The most common symptom of Breast Cancer is a new lump or mass.” This year, roughly 330,000 women in the USA will be diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Out of these cases, 50% of those 50 and older and 71% of those under age 50 will discover that “lump or bump” on their own.
What About Mammograms?
To be sure, if you have been getting regular mammograms, be sure you understand the risks associated with them .
In a 23 year study on hundreds of women, it was found that mammography found a lump 43% of the time, while “human touch” found it 56% of the time!
That being said, you have a lot of other options for detection as well. Ultrasound uses sound waves to create images of the breast. It is non-invasive and does not cause pain.
I have long been a proponent of thermography since it is radiation-free, non-invasive and does not compress the breast tissue. What’s more, thermography performed by a certified professional can alert you about physiological changes that are occurring in the breast tissue, long before anything can be seen on a mammogram.
No screening tool is a stand alone diagnostic tool – regardless of your choice of screening, do a back-up, secondary screening in order to get an additional view of your breast tissue.
All modalities that include a visit to a professional have one thing in common….. they all rely on external sources to monitor your breast health. Even if you do your yearly mammogram , ultrasound and/or thermogram, there are still 364 days of the year where your breast tissue can change.
According to an analysis published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute , “interval cancers” are cancers that are detected in between the one to two year period between recommended screenings. These “interval cancers” tend to be more aggressive.
What is My Breast Friend™ ?
My Breast Friend™ is a breast self-exam training system based on the MammaCare Method®. MammaCare® was created in 1974 by a team of scientists at the University of Florida in conjunction with the National Cancer Institute and the National Science Foundation. To date, MammaCare® has trained thousands of doctors worldwide in human breast examination. It is the “recognized standard for teaching and performing clinical personal breast exams.”
How Is My Breast Friend(TM) Unique?
My Breast Friend ™ is a unique program that allows women like you the opportunity to benefit from expert and proven training in the comfort of your own home. Accurate breast self-exam is not something you can learn by simply watching a video or attending a class. It is important that you have experiential knowledge of what you are looking for. In other words, you have to be able to feel what a suspicious lump may feel like compared to your normal breast tissue.
This is exactly why the My Breast Friend™ kit comes with a breast simulation model. This model allows you to practice specific finger movements and proper finger pressure. It also comes with a 20 minute instructional video and booklet so you can learn to feel confident in palpating your breast tissue.
Using My Breast Friend™ Could Potentially Save Your Life
Let’s face it, performing a BSE without the proper training can be confusing. Evidence over the years has proven that the MammaCare® training works, however. For example, the average lump size that untrained women can find in their own breast tissue is typically about the size of ping pong ball. The average size that women trained in the MammaCare Method® can detect is about the size of a small pea.
Detecting a cancer when it is this small can literally save your life. Dr. S.A. Narod of University of Toronto says that when the cancer has not spread and it the tumor is pea-sized, a woman’s 15-year survival rate can jump to over 88%!
