Looking for the Right Diet for You? Your Genes May Point the Way

The Mediterranean. Vegan. Ketogenic. There are so many diets out there and for each one, there is an expert that will say that their way is the best way. Especially if you are on a Healthy Breast journey [1], choosing what to eat for healing is one of the most important choices you will make. A new test on your genes may be able to add a bit of clarity amidst the confusion.

The Nutrition Genome Test

As you also probably know, finding the right healing diet is not a matter of “one size fits all.” It is a delicate matter that is unique to each individual. Fortunately, modern technology can help you figure out where you reside on the nutritional map. The  Nutrition Genome [2] is an affordable, easy, at-home cheek swab test that helps you find out the unique ways your body metabolizes food.

This test gave me a lot of clarity about my food choices and I believe it can do the same for you. It helped me understand why the ketogenic diet or a purely plant-based diet may not be right for everyone.

For example – One fallacy about the Arctic populations like the Inuit is that they are an example of a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet that puts them in a perpetual state of ketosis. While it is true they have a low carbohydrate intake and high-fat diet during certain parts of the year, they are rarely in a state of ketosis due to genetic differences. Their high protein intake is converted to sugar and thus, no ketosis.  The Inuit also have been found to have a deleted genetic snip that prevents them from converting plant Omega 3’s to usable EPA and DHA. Thus they need more Omega 3’s from animal fats. (Something I discovered about myself through this test!)

Food Choices based on the Nutrition Genome Test

Each person is unique inside and out. While some people may thrive on eating a ketogenic diet short term. for others, it may not be the right choice.

I have been studying my DNA for many years now, and I am always fascinated by the new information that we can gather to support our bodies.

The Nutrition Genome test [2] will look at your strengths and weaknesses in the following categories:

1.) What foods best support your digestion. Can you eat a high-fat diet or should you minimize fat?

2.) Do you have a methylation problem and if so, how can you best support those pathways?

3.) What nutrients can best support your hormones?

4.) Are your mitochondria adversely affected by glyphosate, poor sleep, and chronic stress?

5.) Which foods should you emphasize and which foods should you avoid?

If you have been on the Healthy Breast path and have been learning about the 7 Essentials® [1] for a while, then you know that your genes don’t define you. However, a test like the  Nutrition Genome [2] can provide you with invaluable information about your unique nutritional “style” by testing for over 80 genetic markers.

Being informed about specific genetic variations unique to you may help you clear up the confusion once and for all about what is the “right way” to eat on your Healthy Breast journey [1]. Know for sure what to put on your plate for optimal healing and an energized vibrant life!
