Are Plant Seed Oils Safer Than Fish Oils?

I am a big fan of healthy fats. If you have been on a Healthy Breast journey [1] for a while, you probably are too. Some researchers, however, are beginning to question the safety of fish oil supplementation and are offering solutions in the form of plant-based “Parent Essential Oils” or PEOs.

Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs): The Basics

If you are new to the concept of healthy fats and how they can help with Breast Cancer, be sure to read THIS BLOG [2]. In the meantime, here are a few things to keep in mind.

Omega 3 fatty acids have the unique job of maintaining cellular health and integrity. They can help the cardio vascular system as well as the brain. They have also been shown to protect against Breast Cancer [3] since they play a role in genetic function.  Omega 3s can be found in extra virgin olive oil, flax, chia, nuts and seeds as well as supplements derived from fish.

Omega 6 fatty acids, on the other hand, tend to get a bad rap  [4] since they are found commercially in GMO-derived corn, soybean and canola oils, and other oils used for frying. But omega 6 fatty acids also have significant health benefits when consumed in the right amounts and from healthy sources. It can calm the nervous system, balance blood pressure and may even help with ADD and ADHD [5] in children.

Parent Essential Oils (PEOs)

The fact that both Omega 3s and Omega 6 fatty acids are necessary for health and must be consumed every day are facts that everyone can agree on. Many researchers are beginning to question the status quo, however, when it comes to fish-derived EFAs.

One researcher leading the way is Professor Brian Peskin [6]. Peskin, a former adjunct professor at Texas Southern University, coined the term “Parent Essential Oils (PEOs)” to describe the two basic fatty acids needed for the body— Linoleic Acid (LA), the parent EFA for Omega 6, and Alpha-Linolenic Acid (ALA), the parent EFA for Omega 3.

According to Peskin:

“All other EFAs excluding ALA and LA are correctly termed EFAn ‘derivatives.’ This includes the most common derivatives such as AA, DHA, EPA, etc. What is not understood by most physicians is that derivatives are made in the body, from the parent EFAs, on an ‘as needed’ basis in extremely limited quantities.”

Peskin points out [7] that fish oils consist of “supra-pharmacological overdoses” of parent derivatives like DHA and EPA [8]. It takes 17 pounds of fish to create 1 fish oil capsule! Contrary to contemporary thinking, Professor Peskin says that the body simply cannot absorb these EFA derivatives. They may actually be damaging to health because fish oils quickly and easily turn rancid.

Fish Oil and Rancidity

Peskin and an increasing number of other experts [9] are also stepping up to address rancidity in fish oil supplements.

According to Peskin [7], for EFAs to do their job in the body, they must be from organic sources. They should not be chemically processed nor heated.

“Research confirms, absolutely, that ‘foods’ containing oxidized (rusted/rancid) oils attached to the cholesterol are the direct cause of vascular disease,” explains Dr. Weeks [9], a medical doctor and founder of the Weeks Clinic [10] in Clinton, Washington. “…most fish oils (though not all) are already rancid before you take them.”

EFAs in fish oils also need to be kept cold. Once they come in contact with normal human body temperature, they begin to turn rancid.  A recent study [11] conducted at the University of Massachusetts found that rancid Omega 3’s have proinflammatory as well as a mutagenic properties that can lead to cancer.

The Iowa Study

The Iowa (Investigating Oils With respect to Arterial blockage) Study was a collaboration between

cardiologist David Sim, M.D. and Professor Peskin. It was the first investigation to use photoplethysmography [12] to determine the effects of PEOs on arterial flexibility (i.e. cardiovascular health).

The results were impressive. Roughly three dozen participants with a median age of 62 used PEOs for approximately 24 months. The average was a 9-year decrease in  biological age, based on arterial age. This resulted in an overall effectiveness rate for PEOs of 73%.

Other studies have hypothesized that PEOs may also be able to undo damage caused by rancid fish oil.

YES EFAs

“Peskin Protocol PEOs”  are one-of-a-kind organic plant-based formulations [13] obtained from sunflower, safflower, pumpkin, evening primrose seed oils and coconut oil. Peskin states that some patients may feel positive results from his PEOs after just three days but achieving total balance may take up to 18 months for many.

[14]Two other great resources for parent Essential Oils are :

1.) Soul from the Rain Company. This delicious oil blend [14] contains seed-based nutrition from black cumin seeds, black raspberry seeds and chardonnay grape seeds. According to their cell based lab trials, this combination of oils reduces inflammation by 33%, increases SIRT1 longevity factor by 62% and  demonstrates a 2.5 times stronger free radical reduction.

2.) Activation Oils [15] are cold pressed with a patented process that does not heat up the oils and keeps them fresh in a special Miron glass jar.

Change comes slowly when it comes to the “scientific status quo,” even in the health community. There is no doubt that a quality source of Omega 3’s and 6’s is a must-have for anyone on a Healthy Breast journey [1].  Yet the issue of safety in fish oil-derived EFAs is one that has concerned me for some time. After many months of research, I am convinced that organically-sourced and scientifically-balanced Parent Seed Oils is the way to go.
