Quick Read:
- From digestion and detoxification to immune strength and hormone regulation, your gut plays a central role in nearly every aspect of breast cancer healing and mood regulation.
- Gut issues can feel like brain fog, anxiety, insomnia, bad breath, skin conditions, and frequent illnesses.
- Hormones, detoxing, and immunity are all managed by your gut.
One of the core beliefs of integrative oncology: healing cannot happen in a body that is inflamed, overwhelmed, and unable to properly absorb nutrients. One of the most common, and often overlooked, sources of that internal imbalance is your gut.
From digestion and detoxification to immune strength and hormone regulation, your gut plays a central role in nearly every aspect of breast cancer healing and mood regulation. However, when gut health is compromised, it creates a ripple effect that affects nearly every system in your body.
It’s truly your body’s control center, so let’s take a look at the dis-eases it can lead to and how you can be in control of your gut and overall health.

The Gut: Your Body’s Control Center
About 70–90% of your immune system and serotonin production (the happiness hormone; more on this later) reside in your gut, the physical organ or system in your body. Your microbiome, the living ecosystem inside of it that consists of trillions of bacteria, fungi, and other microbes, plays a direct role in:
- Regulating inflammation
- Supporting detoxification pathways
- Balancing hormones like estrogen
- Communicating with your brain (gut-brain axis)
- Protecting against pathogens and infections
On the other hand, most of the time, gut dysfunction is associated with digestive issues. It can manifest as:
- Brain fog
- Anxiety and depression
- Insomnia
- Chronic fatigue
- Bad breath
- Skin conditions (acne, eczema, rashes)
- Hormonal imbalances
- Frequent illness
Regarding breast cancer, gut dysfunction or dysbiosis can lead to chronic inflammation, immune dysfunction, and an internal environment that is more favorable for cancer growth and many other dis-eases to sprout.
Common Gut Issues That Can Impact Breast Cancer Healing
Your body is beautiful, powerful, and magnificently connected. But this also means that when your gut is off, many other issues will surface as warning signs. This blog covers many of them, but it would be nearly impossible to list them all since most dis-eases are connected to your gut in some way. Similarly, we can offer a few helpful insights, but for truly personalized healing solutions, please consult your private coach [1] and medical team to develop an action plan.
1. SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth)
SIBO occurs when bacteria that should live in the large intestine overgrow in the small intestine.
Symptoms include:

- Bloating (especially after meals)
- Gas and abdominal discomfort
- Nutrient deficiencies
- Diarrhea or constipation
- Bad breath
- Thyroid issues
A big thing to note: SIBO can also impair nutrient absorption, so even the healthiest diet may not deliver what your body needs to heal.
Tips: Listen to this podcast episode [2] with Shivan Sarna, the author of Healing SIBO and creator of SIBO SOS® Summits and Community, for real and practical tips.
2. GERD (Acid Reflux)
Chronic reflux is often misunderstood as too much stomach acid, but it’s frequently caused by too little acid or poor digestion.
Why it matters:
- Impairs protein digestion
- Reduces mineral absorption
- Can signal deeper gut imbalances
Tips: Addressing underlying issues such as stress, microbiome imbalances, or SIBO is key to resolving reflux at its root rather than just masking symptoms with potentially harmful long-term PPIs and antacids.
3. IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)
IBS is a functional disorder with symptoms like:
- Alternating diarrhea and constipation
- Cramping
- Bloating
It’s often linked to stress, gut-brain dysfunction, and microbiome imbalance.
Tips: Calm the gut-brain connection by reducing stress (get ideas here [3]) and supporting the nervous system (listen for more insight [4]), while identifying food triggers and microbiome imbalances through personalized testing.
4. Leaky Gut (Intestinal Permeability)
This is one of the most critical issues in cancer healing. It’s caused by inflammatory foods [5], sugar [6], mold [7], chronic stress [8], toxins [9], parasites [10], and many other things plaguing our modern world.
When the gut lining becomes damaged, it allows toxins, undigested food particles, and microbes to “leak” into the bloodstream, triggering immune reactions and systemic
inflammation.
This can lead to:
- Food sensitivities
- Autoimmune conditions
- Chronic inflammation
- Hormonal disruption
Tips: Repair the gut lining by removing inflammatory triggers, support with gut-healing nutrients (like L-glutamine, Curcumin [11], and Zinc [12]), and restoring microbial balance. Consist
ency is key to sealing the gut and calming immune overreactions. You can also find out the right diet for you by taking the Nutrition Genome Test. [13]
5. Crohn’s Disease & Inflammatory Bowel Conditions
These are more severe inflammatory conditions that damage the digestive tract and significantly impair nutrient absorption and immune balance.
Tips: Focus on reducing inflammation with a nutrient-dense, easy-to-digest diet, identify immune triggers, and support gut repair. Personalized care and ongoing monitoring are essential for long-term stability.
6. Parasites & Hidden Infections
Parasites are often overlooked but can:
- Suppress immune function
- Create chronic inflammation
- Disrupt the microbiome
- Steal nutrients from the body
Tips: This is a BIG issue because many people have them without obvious symptoms. To learn more about the parasite, gut health, cancer connection, and practical solutions, stop and read this blog [10] and this one. [14]
7. Food Sensitivities
Unlike immediate food allergies, sensitivities can be delayed and subtle.
Common signs:
- Brain fog
- Fatigue
- Skin issues
- Joint pain
- Digestive discomfort
These immune reactions keep the body in a constant state of low-grade inflammation.
Tips: Identify and temporarily remove trigger foods while healing the gut lining and reducing inflammation. The Nutrition Genome Test [13] may be helpful in identifying what foods work and do not work for your DNA.
The Gut-Brain-Mental Health Connection
Your gut produces about 90% of your serotonin, the neurotransmitter responsible for mood, happiness, and emotional stability. (Study [15])
When your gut is inflamed or imbalanced:
- Neurotransmitter production is disrupted
- Stress hormones increase
- Anxiety and depression can worsen
This is why healing your gut is not just about physical benefits but also deeply emotional and neurological. As we said above, your entire body is wonderfully woven together. And, as you know full well, during times of high stress from managing treatments, appointments, fears, fatigue, and cancer in general, focusing on your serotonin production is critical.
How Gut Health Impacts Hormones, Detox, and Immunity
Hormonal Balance
Your gut microbiome helps regulate estrogen through the estrobolome (a collection of gut bacteria that metabolize estrogen).
An unhealthy gut can lead to:
- Estrogen dominance (learn more here [16])
- Poor hormone detoxification
- Increased cancer risk or recurrence
Detoxification
Your liver and gut work together to eliminate toxins.
If your gut is sluggish or inflamed:
- Toxins can be reabsorbed
- Detox pathways become overwhelmed
- The body becomes more toxic overall
This is a main reason why the 7 Essentials System® [17] includes: Reduce Your Toxic Exposure. Click here [9] to read blogs on reducing toxins and detoxing them out of your body.
Immune Function
A compromised gut = a confused immune system.
This can result in:
- Reduced ability to detect and destroy cancer cells
- Increased inflammation
- Greater susceptibility to infections and illnesses, even cancer
