“Dad, I want you to tell my story to as many people as possible, so women can detect their cancer early and not go through what I have.” Keesha, who passed away at a tragically young age of 34, told her father.
Her father, Bob Furniss, who joined us for this episode, has gone above and beyond with her request. He wrote a book: On To Blue: The Story of a Breast Cancer Warrior Through the Eyes of a Dad (learn more here), started an early detection nonprofit for younger (WarriorPrincess.org), and is sharing his daughter’s fierce fighting spirit and sage wisdom with you today!
Here on this podcast, we know the stories we tell have power. We believe that knowing your body and acting early are so critical in healing breast cancer that it is Essential #7 in Dr. V’s 7 Essentials System®. Too many lives have been forever altered by silent symptoms, delayed exams, or the assumption that “it can’t happen to me.” But it did happen—and so we speak it, write about it, (Click here to review our post on early-onset cancer), and turn pain into passion.
Together, let’s explore how to listen to our bodies, advocate for our health, and encourage those around us. Bring a tissue box, because this one is personal and deeply moving.

Here are some highlights from this Podcast:
- A Father’s Legacy of Love and Awareness
Bob Furniss shares the heartfelt story of his daughter Keesha, a spirited teacher who faced stage 4 breast cancer with courage and grace. Her wish was for her story to help others detect cancer early. A mission Bob continues through his book Onto Blue and nonprofit Warrior Princess. - The Power of Early Detection
Younger women are often diagnosed at later stages because breast cancer isn’t expected at their age. Bob’s message is clear: know your body, trust your instincts, and never hesitate to speak up if something feels off. - Turning Grief into Action
Through Warrior Princess, Bob and his wife have distributed over 70,000 shower reminder cards that encourage self-exams. This simple daily reminder has already helped women detect lumps early and possibly save their lives. - Lessons from Keesha’s Wisdom (“Keesha-isms”)
Keesha’s sayings live on like, “Don’t let your disabilities affect your ability to see the positives in life.” She taught others to embrace who they are, find strength in challenges, and keep moving forward with hope. - A Message for Caregivers and Families
Bob reminds parents and loved ones to focus on advocacy, presence, and encouragement. His guiding motto—“Just keep swimming”—captures the importance of resilience and hope in the face of loss.
