Bone Metastasis: New Supportive Therapies, More Hope, and What You Can Do Today

Quick Read:

  • Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) are two therapies at The Karlfeldt Center that can help support bone metastasis.
  • Ionic calcium, magnesium, pancreatic enzymes, and melatonin are supportive supplements to take.
  • Bone metastasis is generally considered not curable, but it is often treatable and manageable. Many targeted supplements and therapies can help control progression, reduce symptoms, and support quality of life.

Hearing the words bone metastasis may bring up fear, uncertainty, and a flood of questions about what this means for your body and your healing journey. First, take a deep breath in and out, knowing that the Breast Cancer Conqueror community is here for you every step of the way. You are not without options, and you are not without support. Yes, this diagnosis (and all others) requires thoughtful, comprehensive care. Yet there are still many ways to support your body, improve your quality of life, and work alongside your medical team and BCC Coach in a meaningful and effective way.

And before we go any further, we want you to know this blog is not about quick fixes or promises. It’s about compassion and informed and integrative support that meets you where you are.

What Is Bone Metastasis?

Bone metastasis is when cancer cells spread from their original site (such as the breast) to the bones, where they can interfere with normal bone structure and function. It is generally considered not curable, but it is often treatable and manageable. Many targeted supplements and therapies can help control progression, reduce symptoms, and support quality of life. You can’t control everything, but you can take action to reduce symptoms and increase your quality of life.

If you or a loved one has bone metastasis, take comfort in knowing that there are plenty of options available, and working with an integrative physician can help you navigate this new chapter of your healing journey. For a few ideas and strategies, keep on reading!

Therapies & Supplements That May Offer Support For Bone Metastasis

As we always say: You have options! There are several emerging and integrative therapies and supplements to discuss with your medical team as part of a comprehensive plan. The two therapies we suggest are offered at The Karlfeldt Center in Idaho, which specializes in integrative oncology.

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a non-invasive and non-toxic treatment that uses light-sensitive compounds activated by specific wavelengths of light to target abnormal cells.

What makes PDT unique is its ability to:

  • Target specific areas without widespread systemic effects
  • Destroys cancer cells with an active form of oxygen
  • Stop tumor growth by cutting off its blood supply
  • Support immune system activation
  • Work synergistically with other therapies

The Karlfeldt Center also offers intravenous (IV) and ultrasound-guided interstitial (tissue) PDT, which are delivered directly into your breast tissue to achieve effective, controlled necrosis and apoptosis (cell death).  It’s an extremely innovative and powerful therapy, and you can learn all about it via the videos on their website. You can also learn more about PDT via our blog post.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)

Dr. V in a HBOT

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized environment. It helps your lungs gather 2-3x more oxygen. By doing so, your body can better fight bacteria and stimulate the release of substances called growth factors and stem cells, which promote healing.

Since cancer cells often thrive in low-oxygen (hypoxic) environments, improving oxygen delivery can help create an environment that pushes cancer out. Specifically, this form of therapy may support tissue healing, reduce inflammation, and promote cellular repair. To learn more about the HBOT and the multi-therapy HOCATT, check out this blog post.

Strategic Supplements

Therapies are more effective in a nourished body that is in a state where healing can occur. This is why it is essential to support your body daily through nutrients and minerals. Below are a few foundational supplements that are often considered in integrative protocols for bone metastasis.

Note: These are not one-size-fits-all recommendations, and you should always talk with your practitioner and BCC Coach before trying anything new. Additionally, our BCC Coaches offer full protocols for you to consider, tailored to your unique body. Please reach out with any questions!

Ionic Calcium

Emerging research suggests that bones rely on bioavailable, ionized calcium to support cellular signaling, repair, and proper mineralization. Yet many conventional calcium supplements are poorly absorbed and may not reach the dynamic and connective tissue that makes up your bones.

Ionic calcium differs from standard calcium because it is already in a dissolved, electrically charged form, making it more easily absorbed and utilized by the body at the cellular level. This enhanced absorption may help support bone integrity, improve mineral balance, and contribute to a more stable internal environment when used as part of a comprehensive care plan for bone metastasis.

Consult with your doctor about an ionized calcium test to determine your exact calcium needs. You can also email store@breastcancerconqueror.com to learn about the types of ionic calcium we recommend.

Magnesium

Magnesium supports over 300 biochemical reactions, making it one of the most critical minerals in your body. Healthy levels of magnesium lead to amazing sleep,

lower levels of depression and anxiety, healthy bowel movements, stronger bones, better cognitive function, and so much more. Specifically for bone metastasis, it can stop progression, promote osteogenesis (bone repair), and reduce tumor migration. For more details, please review this recent study.

We are such big advocates of Magnesium that we included it in our signature line, and you can buy it here.

Proteolytic (Pancreatic) Enzymes

Proteolytic enzymes help with digestion AND break down the protein coating of the cancer cell so that your immune system can detect andfight it. By doing so, it makes cancer cells’ walls weak and vulnerable, which creates an environment where cancer can no longer thrive. This is why Dr. V used high-dose pancreatic enzyme supplements during BOTH healing journeys. To this day, she still takes a maintenance dose of 5 capsules of Pancreas Enzymes on an empty stomach, 3 times per day.

To discover more about pancreatic enzymes, please review this blog post.

Melatonin

Melatonin is more than a sleep hormone and a widely used supplement. It also acts as a powerful antioxidant and may help strengthen your immune, detox systems, and “rest and repair” systems.

In the context of bone metastasis, melatonin is a promising therapeutic agent that inhibits osteoclast activity (bone breakdown), reduces tumor-induced bone degradation, and suppresses cancer cell invasion. (Study

Talk to your medical team to see if high-dose melatonin or regular melatonin should be part of your supplement routine.

The Role Your Nervous System Plays In Bone Metastasis Management

Doctors are trained in very specific areas and may not have the resources or the time to work with you in every aspect of your journey. But that is why you are here: to create longevity and transformational health for your body, mind, and soul.

One of the most overlooked aspects of healing, especially in advanced diagnoses, is the state of your nervous system.

Chronic stress, fear, and emotional overwhelm can physically impact:

  • Immune function
  • Inflammation levels
  • Hormonal balance

This is why our 7 Essentials System® includes Essential #3: Balance Your Energy and Essential #4: Heal Your Emotional Wounds. Your nervous system is something you DO have control over, and there are practical, accessible therapies to help you find calm and a sense of control.

You Don’t Have to Navigate This Alone

If you are reading this, you are already doing something incredibly powerful: you are seeking information, asking questions, and exploring ways to support your body. Give yourself a hug and a high-five for being proactive.  And remember: While bone metastasis is a serious diagnosis, it does not define your entire story. There is still space for support, comfort, joy, awe, wonder, and being authentically you. Surround yourself with a team that sees you as a whole person, not just a diagnosis.

Stay curious. Stay supported. And take each step one at a time.
