Why is glycocalyx health important?

The endothelial glycocalyx is a carbohydrate-rich layer lining the vascular endothelium (veins and capillaries). It is connects to the endothelium through several “backbone” molecules, mainly proteoglycans and glycoproteins. A healthy glycocalyx structure can support the continuous delivery of nutrients, hormones, and the elimination of waste flows through the capillaries. However, a weak glycocalyx does the opposite—weakens nutrient absorption, offsets hormones, and clogs your body with toxins. All of which can be part of how cancer develops in the body.
