A cancer diagnosis is overwhelming, scary, and evokes dozens of emotions that you may not even have a name for. One feeling could be hearing all these new words, such as ‘Natural Killer Cells’ or ‘Apoptosis.’ These words, which have never entered your life until now, are critical for your healing journey.
And that is one of the reasons why you are here. We are here for emotional support, providing simple answers to complex words, breaking down your therapy options so you can make informed decisions, and helping you make this a time of thriving — not just surviving. Take advantage of our free blog, podcast, and recipes. And then go deeper with our online course and virtual retreats so that you can confidently create a healing ACTION PLAN that works for you.
And now, back to understanding what your doctor means when they mention NK Cells.
What Are Natural Killer Cells (NK Cells)?
They are part of your immune cells that are your body’s frontline defense. This army consists of: Natural Killer, T cells, macrophages, and dendritic cells. You are born with them, and their primary function is to kill infected and tumor cells, hence the name.
In recent years, science has been uncovering the powerful, complementary role that Natural Killer (NK) cells play in breast cancer healing. There are also a few Natural Killer Cell-specific therapies, as well as many more in development, that may provide remarkable results.
Key features of Natural Killer Cells: (all info is from this 2025 Study)
- NK cells don’t require an antigen to recognize a target. They can act without prior sensitization, making them faster responders.
- They can produce signaling molecules (cytokines) that modulate the broader immune response.
- There are subtypes of NK Cells. For instance, CD56^bright NK cells (more regulatory / cytokine producers) and CD56^dim NK cells (more cytotoxic, found in peripheral blood).
- NK cells don’t rely on T-cell receptors (unlike T cells). They can sometimes be used in “allogeneic” or donor settings (less risk of rejection) in immunotherapy design.
If none of the above made sense, think of NK cells as the immune system’s patrol force. They are always scanning for suspicious behavior and ready to act swiftly.

How NK Cells Detect And Kill Cancerous Cells
NK cells use a delicate balance of “on” and “off” signals to decide whether a cell is dangerous. If the inhibitory signals dominate, they stand down. Even better, if activating signals dominate (i.e., the cell is stressed, mutated, or showing unusual markers), NK cells can deliver a lethal hit.
Mechanisms of NK cell cytotoxicity include:
- Perforin + Granzymes: NK cells release perforin, which creates pores in the target cell membrane. Through those pores, granzymes (proteases) enter and trigger apoptosis (programmed cell death).
- Death receptor pathways: NK cells can engage death receptors (like Fas) on target cells, triggering internal death cascades.
- Cytokine production: NK cells secrete IFN-γ and other cytokines that help recruit and activate other immune cells (macrophages, T cells).
- Antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC): via CD16 receptor, NK cells may bind antibodies coating a tumor cell and kill it.
Because they don’t require that a tumor cell present a specific antigen (unlike T cells), NK cells are uniquely positioned to catch cells that have evolved to evade the more specialized immune surveillance.
Benefits of Natural Killer Cells for Breast Cancer Healing
There are many benefits, and scientists have barely scratched the surface of the power that Natural Killer cells could hold for breast cancer and many other dis-eases. Below are a few that Breast Cancer Conquerors should be aware of.
- Tumor immunosurveillance and early elimination: NK cells may target early, mutated cells before they develop into full-blown cancers. In breast tissue, this surveillance may help prevent recurrence or micro-metastases from taking hold.
- Elevate conventional therapies for an integrative approach: NK cells can be combined with chemotherapy, radiotherapy, targeted therapy, or checkpoint inhibitors to improve outcomes and quality of life.
- Engineered NK cells and adoptive transfer: Scientists are developing CAR-NK cells (chimeric antigen receptor NK) that target specific breast cancer antigens (like HER2). Because NK cells are less likely to trigger graft-versus-host disease, they may be safer for off-the-shelf use than CAR-T.
Groundbreaking Study: NK Cells Can Stop Metastasis
In 2020, a first-of-its-kind, groundbreaking study found that NK Cells can be reprogrammed to stop metastasis. As we mentioned above, science has only recently begun to tap into the power of NK Cells. There is still much to research, but we are off to a promising start. In any case, this study employed a novel 3-D cell culture method to observe the interactions between NK cells and invasive breast cancer cells in real-time. The researchers observed that NK cells activate an enzyme in K14+ cells, causing them to undergo cell death. Meaning that when used strategically, NK Cells limit early metastasis. For more information, please refer to the study here.
Researchers are currently using this information to develop a specific therapy to prevent metastasis. However, there are several things you can do today to prevent it. Please read this blog post for specific actions to take, and this one on the GlycoCheck Test.
Natural Killer Cell Clinical Trials and Therapies Available
Given their speed, flexibility, and cytotoxic power, NK cells are being intensively studied as therapeutic agents in the fight against breast cancer. Currently, numerous clinical trials are underway, and below are a few options to consider with your medical team.
- The Cancer BioShield™: This revolutionary approach utilizes Memory Cytokine-Enriched Natural Killer (M-ceNK) cell therapy, Ex-vivo Targeted Cytotoxicity (CAR-NK Cells), and In-Vivo Stimulation to expand NK and T cells. This comprehensive, novel immune-restoring therapeutic platform aims not only to expand effector immune cells but also to overcome tumor-mediated immune suppression, thereby supporting long-term disease control. Learn all about it via this blog post.
- NK Exosome Therapy: Natural killer (NK) cell exosomes are emerging as a powerful, non-toxic cancer therapy that selectively targets damaged or cancerous cells without harming healthy tissue. It can be used preventively in high-risk individuals or alongside conventional treatments like chemo or surgery. To learn more, please listen to this podcast episode with Dr. Jeffery Gross.
- Immune Complete Supplement: Our Immune Complete supplement features a strategic blend of adaptogenic herbs that enhance normal natural killer (NK) cell activity and cytokine balance for optimal immune system responses. In short, they contain bioactive compounds that support the body’s natural defenses, teaching it to better detect and respond to abnormal cells, and improve quality of life during and after breast cancer treatment.
Natural Support For NK Cells
There are many practical actions you can take right now to support your natural killer cells, such as the tips below. Hopefully, they are already part of your vibrantly healthy protocols.
- Support your immune system holistically. NK cells, like all immune cells, depend on good nutrition, restorative sleep, low inflammation, and a healthy mindset.
- Avoid immune-suppressive habits. Chronic stress, poor sleep, and persistent inflammation are just a few ways your body will suppress NK and other immune cells.
- Take immune system-supporting supplements, such as Immune Complete.
- Focus on holistic healing of body, mind, and soul with a balanced approach. If you haven’t yet, start our online course to learn how to harmoniously blend natural medicine with conventional care to create the most effective plan for you.
