As many of you may know, I am a proponent of calorie restriction and fasting for “rebooting” the immune system. For many, however, typical fasting routines may be unsafe. And for some, going for prolonged periods of time without eating is just plain hard. I recently discovered a program called the “Fasting Mimicking Diet.” I was impressed with the research and the Science so I decided to give it a try myself!
What is the Fasting Mimicking Diet?
The Fasting Mimicking Diet, or FMD, was created by Dr. Valter Longo, a bio gerontologist who specializes in Alzheimer’s Disease, cancer, diabetes and genetics. He is also the director of the Longevity Institute at the University of Southern California. Longo created the Fasting Mimicking Diet after years of research on healthy aging. The FMD is a patented 5-day plant-based meal program. It gives you the benefits of fasting without having to go without food.
In 2016, Longo and his team conducted a mouse-model investigation through the USC School of Medicine on the FMD and Multiple Sclerosis. The findings were published in the journal Cell Reports among others. What they discovered was impressive.
Besides improvements related M.S., the Fasting Mimicking Diet also:
-Simulated the production of healthy stem cells;
-Strengthened bones;
-Regenerated insulin-producing “beta cells;”
-Prevented against cognitive decline;
-Reduced cancer incidence; and
-expanded lifespan.
In addition, that same year the Longo team put the FMD through Phase I Clinical trials. Healthy individuals participated in the 5-day plan once a month for 3 months. The results were published in the February 2017 edition of the journal Science Translational Medicine and were equally impressive.
They found that the FMD lhad an impact on:
-cholesterol;
-blood pressure;
–Insulin Growth Factor 1, a hormone that fuels pro-aging mTOR pathways;
–C Reactive Protein, a marker for inflammation;
–“visceral” fat stores associated with chronic disease.
My Experience with the Fasting Mimicking Diet
Through Dr. Longo’s company, ProLon ™, those who wish to try the FMD can purchase a “diet in a box.” The ProLon™ program provides a 5-day supply of soups, bars and other nutritional supplements. It is high in healthy fats and low in protein and sugar. Most importantly, Dr. Longo has designed the diet to be completed only once a month, which allows the body to self-repair and remove damaged cells.
I tested my sugars morning and late afternoon and they stayed in the low 80’s. I physically felt like my body was fasting, but I was still able to eat. I have to admit that by the 3rd day I felt a little toxic and tired but a coffee enema flipped that switch rather quickly. 🙂

The Healing Power of Calorie Restriction and Intermittent Fasting
For more than a century, there’s been ample evidence of the benefits of calorie restriction. In 2013, researchers at Thomas Jefferson University discovered that calorie restriction and intermittent fasting could decrease the number of spontaneously-occurring tumors and slow the growth of primary ones. In addition, a 2012 report in the Proceeding of the Nutrition Society found that calorie restriction could shrink Breast Cancer tumors, in part through balancing IGF-1 and lowering visceral fat stores.
I am grateful to Dr. Valter Longo for his efforts in the fields of longevity and fasting. Making a major change in your diet for the benefit of your Healthy Breast Journey can be challenging to say the least. Now you may have an easier way through the Fasting Mimicking Diet!

you mention a coffee enema? Are you joking or did you really have a coffee enema?
Hello Maria! I know that it sounds a little bizarre, but I am definitely not joking! Consider this blog: https://breastcancerco.wpengine.com/coffee-enemas-a-must-for-a-toxic-world/
How often would you do coffee enemas a day, per week, per month, forever ?
How long and how often? How would it affect the good/bad bacteria in the bowel? Thank you in advance.

It depends on where you are at in your healing journey. For general health maintenance, 2-3 per week can be considered; more if you are on an active healing journey. It does not affect the bowel function as it only affects the lower 4-6 inches of the colon, but you can add probiotics to the coffee if you prefer.
