How Important is Your Thyroid for Breast Health?

thryoidbreastcancer

January is US National Thyroid Awareness Month. Why am I mentioning this on a site dedicated to healing Breast Cancer naturally? For the simple reason that your thyroid – and its connection to the essential mineral iodine – may be one of the most important parts of your body to keep healthy if you wish to prevent and health Breast Cancer.

The Thyroid Disease Epidemic

The Unites States is facing an epidemic when it comes to thyroid disease. According to the American Thyroid Association, more than 12 percent of the entire U.S. population (and one in eight women) will develop a thyroid condition at some point in their lives, including hyperthyroidism, thyroiditis, hypothyroidism, Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis and Thyroid Cancer.

Hands down, however, the most common form of thyroid disease is hypothyroidism, where an under-functioning thyroid does not produce enough thyroid hormones and the bodies functions begin to slow down. Close to 5 percent of the U.S. population 12 and over suffer from an under-active thyroid.

Symptoms of hypothyroidism can vary from person to person but can include:

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland that sits on the throat and is responsible for the distribution of many key hormones in the body.

-weight gain

-memory loss

-fatigue

-constipation

-sensitivity to cold

– slower than normal heart rate

-pain and stiffness, especially in the joints

-uterine fibroids and fibrocystic breasts

-thinning hair

-depression

-goiter

In addition, taking synthetic thyroid medication has been found to increase your risk  of Breast Cancer by 200%!

Iodine Deficiency Epidemic

So why there so many people suffering from hypothyroidism? The main culprit lies in lack of sufficient iodine to meet all of the needs of the body. In fact, iodine deficiency is a problem that has grown exponentially in recent years; it is estimated that  95 % of the world’s population is iodine deficient!

one of the main cause of iodine depletion is toxic overload. This can especially occur when the body has been saturated with too much fluoride, mostly coming from drinking water, chlorine, a common additive in swimming pools, and/or bromide, which is a pesticide residue and also a flame retardant found in plastics, in the interior linings of automobiles, carpeting, furniture and electronics. These toxins block the absorption of iodine in the body, leaving the endocrine and the reproductive systems to fight over a limited supply.

And contrary to popular belief, so-called “iodine enriched” table salt DOES NOT give you enough iodine to satisfy all of your body’s iodine needs. In fact, iodized table salt is just another source of environmental toxins. It contains aluminum , anti-caking agents and even dextrose, which is a form of sugar.

Iodine Deficiency and Breast Cancer

Typical table salt does not contain enough iodine to satify all of the body's needs...and it is full of toxins to boot!

Low iodine levels is always a red flag when it comes to Breast Cancer risk. Iodine is an essential element that every cell in the body needs in order to function; this is especially true for glandular tissues such as the thyroid, breast, ovaries, prostate and colon. Recent studies have found that the Japanese consume close to 95 times more iodine as part of their diet than the US RDA calls for, mostly in the form of seaweed. Subsequently, the Japanese tend to have cancer rates that are much lower than the US population and enjoy greater longevity overall.

Simply put, if you are on a healthy breast path (and especially if you are healing from Breast Cancer, getting an iodine test is a MUST-DO.

It is easy and relatively inexpensive as well.  The kit, which also checks bromide levels as well as fluoride levels (optional), can be ordered HERE. Everything you will need for the test will be mailed directly to you– you simply send it back to the lab. The results will be mailed to you directly. If you are an active client, one of our trained “7 Essentials System” coaches will review the results and discuss how you may benefit from iodine supplementation, if warranted by your test results.

Being “proactive with prevention” has to include making sure your iodine levels are adequate enough to fulfill all off your bodies needs, including the needs of a healthy reproductive system.  Through testing, supplementation (if needed), detoxing and right nutrition, it is possibly to stabilize an imbalanced thyroid naturally and prevent breast cancer in the process.

  • What are your options if you have had a total thyroidectomy and you are on thyroid supplementation as a result and you have LCIS?

    • Hi Debbie, if you have had a total thyroidectomy, you need thyroid medication. You can ask your doctor about trying Armour Thyroid or Nature Throid. You can also still do iodine testing to make sure you are in the appropriate range.
