Melatonin isn’t just a handy, all-natural sleep aid – studies show that it can actually stop cancer from growing! The most innovative cancer researchers are now discovering that high-dose melatonin literally puts breast cancer cells to sleep. This is why I take Melatonin Max nightly, as it helps to calm my body, sends me into a deep and restorative sleep, prevents metastasis, and provides numerous health benefits.
When buying melatonin, make sure to get it in its purest form. Obviously, ones with added sweeteners, artificial food dyes, or other additives can cause harmful side effects since they shouldn’t enter your diet at all.
This article only provides a peak into the power of high-dose melatonin for breast cancer. Melatonin 101
Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland and is also converted from serotonin, which is produced in the intestines. This is just one of the many reasons why you want a healthy gut. Melatonin is also found in the mitochondria and other parts of your cells, which is why cancer is a cellular disease. Unhealthy cells can invite cancer in.
Melatonin made by your body and in supplemental form, provides antioxidants, stimulates apoptosis (cell death), and has immunomodulation abilities that support healthy cells and weaken cancer cells. It’s a mighty molecule that deserves far more attention than it currently gets. Below are a few of melatonin’s main roles and a few reasons why it deserves your attention:
- Empowering immune system functionality and regulating inflammation—which are the root causes of many diseases.
- Acts as your body’s “internal clock” or “circadian rhythm.”
- Changes strong and harmful estrogens (toxins) into milder, less aggressive estrogens—which can prevent breast cancer from creeping in.
- Regulates blood pressure and cardiovascular systems.
- Detoxes free radicals and heavy metals out of your central nervous system.
- Protects your brain from oxidative stress.
While numerous roles are waiting to be discovered and thoroughly researched, melatonin is a powerful hormone your body produces. However, sometimes you need to supplement for extra healing because we live in a toxic and stressed-out world. Illness, an unhealthy diet, normal aging, insufficient exposure to natural light, chronic stress, too much exposure to blue light and EMFs, drugs, and alcohol, working night shifts, and certain medications are just a few things that can drastically decrease your body’s ability to produce melatonin.
High Dose Melatonin Stops Cancer Growth
Please note: Healing cancer and living a vibrantly healthy life requires a multi-therapeutic approach, which is why I created the 7 Essentials System®. High-dose melatonin could be a part of your healing journey. Please talk to your medical team before trying anything new. Different supplements could affect how certain medications work.
As of June 2023, there are over 3,307 published studies in PubMed (The National Library of Medicine) on the benefits of high-dose melatonin. The majority of the topics include cancer prevention, complementary therapy to chemo and radiation, and a helpful supplement for people on a cancer healing journey. While many untapped cases and studies still need to be completed, the current research is promising, trustworthy, and exciting.
Many experts are now aligning together and stating the underlying mechanisms of high-dose melatonin include: “antioxidant activity, modulation of melatonin receptors MT1 and MT2, stimulation of apoptosis, regulation of pro-survival signaling and tumor metabolism, inhibition on angiogenesis, metastasis, and induction of epigenetic alteration. Melatonin could also be utilized as an adjuvant of cancer therapies, through reinforcing the therapeutic effects and reducing the side effects of chemotherapies or radiation.”
These anticancer effects could support the prevention and treatment of several cancers including breast cancer, prostate cancer, gastric, and colorectal cancer.
Dr. Russell Reiter has studied Melatonin for decades. With some 1,600 papers to his credit, as well as three honorary doctor of medicine(1) degrees, he’s published more studies on melatonin than anyone else alive. Based on his studies, he is confident that there are no known toxic threshholds for Melatonin.
MTNR1B
Our bodies are extraordinarily integrated structures. Each detail and cell has a profound effect on your entire body. In 2012, a new gene was added to the Nutrition Genome Report, (a DNA test that I highly recommend) , called MTNR1B. This gene encodes for the melatonin receptor 1B. Melatonin release starts soon after sundown, peaks between 2 am and 4 am, and decreases gradually. In approximately one-third of individuals, melatonin release is delayed in the evening and stays elevated longer in the morning. So if you are taking high dose Melatonin and you are having difficulty keeping your fasting blood sugar at 80 or below, you may want to check to see if you have that genetic SNP.
High Dose Melatonin + Chemotherapy
The Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center conducted a study on the impact of combining high-dose melatonin with chemotherapy.
The incredible findings are something to celebrate!
- 40% greater one-year survival
- 93% greater chance of having a complete response (no tumor identified)
- 253% greater chance of having a partial response
- 15% chance of having stable disease after the combined therapy
- Significantly reduced weakness, fatigue, sickness, and lowering of white cell count.
Another comprehensive 2021 study concluded several breast cancer use cases for high-dose melatonin and combing it with conventional and natural treatments. A few of the highlights include:
- Stopping cancer cells from dividing and spreading.
- Supporting cellular necrosis is the death of cells in your body tissues.
- Increasing energy and ability to sleep in women receiving chemo or radiation treatments.
- Improving mental functionality in women receiving chemo or radiation treatments.
- Inducing apoptosis, cancer cell death.
- Boosting and regulating your immune system. This can make conventional treatments more effective while supporting your body’s ability to heal naturally.
Heal With An Integrative Approach
Combining high-dose melatonin (such as Melatonin Max) and chemo or radiation is just one of the countless ways to effectively heal cancer using the best of Eastern and Western medicine. One thing did not cause cancer, so one thing will not heal it and give you vibrant health. It takes a strategic combo of strategic and synergetic approaches to heal your body, mind, and soul.
